Data Protection Board of India Established as a Digital-First Regulator
Provisions setting up the Data Protection Board of India (DPBI) took effect on 13 November 2025, with a search-cum-selection committee to appoint its members.
The provisions establishing the Data Protection Board of India (DPBI) came into force on 13 November 2025. The Board will function as a digital office: complaints can be filed online and tracked through a dedicated portal and mobile app, and hearings may be conducted using techno-legal measures.
The Board is to comprise four members, including a Chairperson, appointed by the Central Government on the recommendation of a search-cum-selection committee. The Board adjudicates breaches, can impose penalties of up to ₹250 crore, and its decisions are appealable to the Appellate Tribunal (TDSAT).
